04. Creative Color Still Life

Artist statement

This piece we were tasked with drawing a still life of an object in the room, before going back in and adding colors that would be considered unrealistic for the object itself. I decided to draw the handbell in the room, using simple black pen ink to start off. After that I decided to stray a bit farther away from the unrealistic color theme; deciding to add some other concepts to it that would be considered strange. Drawing on some gems, they crusted around the base of the bell while slowly extending up. Overlapping each other, these gems are what I added my color too; which consisted up varying shades of blue, purple, and gray pen ink. Not much changed about this piece, except maybe the debate that I had with myself over what object I actually wanted to draw, but after that, things went fairly smoothly. I already knew the color scheme that I wanted to stick to after I decided to include the gems with the bell, so honestly, no big changes were made.

Overall it’s kinda hit or miss with me for this piece. I really like the assignment and the concept of what I drew, but honestly, I’m not really loving how my materials turned out. Pen ink seemed like a good idea to me in the being, as that's the material that I have had the most experiences with. But after I saw how the final piece came out, the pen ink doesn't really do it for me. I feel like its too bold, the detail that I’m usually able to achieve with ink not really being established here. I feel like if I wanted to revise in the future I would probably start from scratch and redo the piece in color pencil. With this material, i feel like I would be able to achieve a lot of the more varying shades that I was looking to do with the pen ink with the color pencils. Potentially perhaps I could even work in some other colors.
