01. Paper Sculpture

Artist Statement

For this piece we were tasked with creating a sculpture out of one sheet of paper. Working with the paper and some glue I decided to create a owl ‘flying’ through an archway. Building up the form of the piece, I created a layered effect with the paper to give the owl more body and shape. With the the the open background of the arch I tried to give the piece the feeling of having a more expanding space; as beforehand with just the plain white background the piece didn't have that ‘open’ and ‘flying’ feel that I was going for. Compared to the beginning when I was just starting out, not much has changed. Besides making that small adjustment to the arch (opening up the arch entirely instead of just in sections.), the only thing that I enveloped as I worked was the number of pieces of paper that I layered to make the overall shape; as in the beginning I grossly underestimated how many layers I would need to make a basic shape. With the owl being a symbol of knowledge and its wing outstretched as it stares forward, the main message/idea that I was trying to represent in this piece is the gaining and expansion of knowledge and thought. Going into a new semester once I started this piece, it portrays my wishes in school till the end of the year; gaining knowledge and growing with it. Overall I’m happy with how this piece turned out. I like the layering effected that I created with it and the overall composition. But if I was to go back and revise in the future, I would probably go back in and add some smaller details to the piece.
