19. Concentration #4

ARTIST STATEMENT:

The fourth assignment in our concentration unit, this piece follows the same self-assigned criteria; my theme for my concentration being 'snakes'. Black ink again returning for this piece, I decided to also use a silver pen and silver tape to add some detailed highlights to the piece; complementing the black ink as well I think. Also set in another portrait styled theme, something I find myself continuously repeating, I actually made this with of the mindset of this being the second version of my third concentration; the art styles being very different and a lot of the bigger details to, the central theme and atmosphere that both the pieces give off stay the same.

Originally in this piece though, things were very different compared to what I first had in my mind. Besides just including snakes, I was also going to include some other animals; crows and frogs being the main two. I was also going to have the main subject holding the animals and have them draped across her shoulders and arm. But after sketching it out, I decided to drop the idea; as I didn't like how it turned out; returning to focus on my main theme, snakes, and working to incorporate those into this piece.

As I mentioned above, this piece served as the second version of my third concentration. Stated in my third concentrations artists statement, I had gone with a very regal theme; the subject presiding on a throne while a crown sat on her head. Though those main details don't show up in this piece, I believe that same regal theme can still be felt. She has a sorta graceful elegance that concentration three's subject also had; a sense that these two individuals clearly hold some sort of power even with their stillness.

Over I'm happy with how this piece came out, the ink details of both silver and black appealing and I like the whole composition that I went for; though I do remain I little annoyed with myself that I yet again decided to create another portrait style piece, something that I'm really trying to break away from especially with my fifth concentration. Really the only thing I could think of to vise in the future would be to try to do something with that little bit of white background still incorporated into the piece. It's not a huge drawback, but I feel if I do decide to fill it with something it will tie up the piece much better.
