22. Concentration #5

Artist Statement

This piece is the fifth piece in my concentration for AP STUDIO ART. Continuing with my theme of "what's in the woods...?, I decided to do a high contrast piece this time. Turning away from watercolor I used only black ink and the white background of my sketchbook paper. For this piece, I wanted to create a rather layered background. Drawing a small flower field in the lower part, I then continued up layering it (and adding my signature shadowy creature) before finishing off with the trees; add a solid black background afterward. Since I'm hoping to explore more aspects of my childhood along with the woods for this concentration, the way I tied that aspect into this piece was by including a very memorable flower into the flower field: lupins. Growing up in Maine, wild lupins are very common here. They can be found all over the roadways during the summer months and I have distinct memories of traveling to and fro and seeing these purple, pink or blue flowers on the side of the road.

Overall I'm feeling pretty ok with how this piece came out. I really like the lower portion with the flower field and figure. But I'm not that in love with the upper part. Though I like the overall forms of the trees, I feel like I should've added more detail to match the lower part. I already filled in the way background completely black, (but for the trees not filled in...) I feel I'll add texture to the tree bark so they blend in with the lower portion more.
