3. Dot Project

Describe: For this piece I decided to make my setting based around space; more specially, a children's book interruption of space. Taking inspiration from differencing pieces of children books, my main goal wasn't to be realistic; but to instead develop the form of a childrens illustrator. With my main theme now on track, I decided to stick to materials that would aloud me to express the bright colors you often see in children books. I first outlined my original sketch in ink, before moving onto my main material; watercolors. I first painted my background in watercolor, before moving onto the smaller details. (sun, stars, planets, spaceship.) The reason why I decided to create this specific artwork was because I had the sudden tinkering to create a children's illustration, after hearing the bases behind this assignment. Going along with the feel of circles (shape), planets and space imminently popped into my mind. Color, shape, texture, and space all played a pretty big part in this piece. I found that the way that I used my paintbrush to stimble the background/universe of this piece, gave it a certain type of texture; and in my mind, really making it pop. Space and color I just arranged to meet my original sketch/idea that I had at the beginning. I couldn't see and defined principles of design in this piece, if any maybe unity or even balance, so the elements of art are what really made this up.

Analyze: In this piece I only saw two main composition rules and techniques that really stood out to me; grouping was one of them. Though the planets might seem kinda scattered, I feel as though there is a sense of unity and grouping within them. Informal balance was another composition rule that I saw in this artwork. I realized afterwards, and rereading the rules and techniques, that with how large I made my sun; it really was the vocal point of the piece. Though you had the few scatterings of planets and a spaceship, nothing could really compare to the vastness of the sun. With the sun as my vocal piece, this places my artwork into the category of informal balance. Originally though, my piece did have some differences compared to this final piece. During my brainstorming session, I was only going to use watercolor for this project. But after sketching it out, I found myself actually turning to my ink pen. Outlining my sketch, and then adding some faint shadows with the ink, I then finished of the piece with my main version of watercolors.

Evaluate: I dont really feel as though this piece has a meaning or story behind it, children books illustrations just stemmed into my channel of inspiration. But if you were to look deeper, I guess I could say I always had fond memories of my childhood picture books. And in all honesty, I did. Going back, I can remember gathering in a circle around my elementary school teachers for story time; and being fascinated by not only the story, but the illustrations that follow it to. Remembering that fondness, you could say that I wanted to channel it into this newest piece. Overall, Im quite happy about how this turned out in the end. In my opinion, I thought I did a pretty good job. The only thing that still kinda hinders at the back of my mind about this piece is actually the sun. I feel happy about the flames protruding from it, but the actual center seems kinda plain to me. If I went back to revise, I would probably try painting the center of the sun to match the flames more.
