8. Post Election Visual

DESCRIBE: For this piece we were to make a ‘statement’ to the election results of this year. I decided to create a statue of liberty, an american icon; but except this time, she would be crying stars and stripes. For this piece I just used watercolor, since I wanted to keep it pretty simple; but the watercolor would express the feeling I was going for. In this piece, I think you can really see the elements of color, shape, and value; emphasis and pattern I think were also used throughout this piece in tears and colors themselves.

ANALYZE: Formal balance is also a contribute you can see in this piece, even though the shadows aren’t even, symmetry on a piece like this is something I think you really need in a piece like this. Selective focus is also something that I think can be seen in this piece, as I think I put a lot of expression of the tears; and less on the background and coloring of the actual shadow. Though in the beginning, there was more focus on the eyes; since I actually planned on putting the pattern in them. But in the end I changed it, thinking that the tears with stripes and stars would work better and have more feeling.

EVALUATE: The actual title for this piece was ‘May She Never Cry’, which I think expresses the true meaning I was going for. The statue of liberty, a symbol of america, seeing her in a state of crying tears, those of which are actually the american flag, conveys the meaning of america losing its ideals; everything that we stand for, just running out of us as a nation. The title ‘May She Never Cry’ puts into play that we should hope this never happens. Remember seeing the statue of liberty in nyc when I went last year, I thought it would be the perfect symbol to express this statement. If I could go back and change any aspect of this piece, I would probably make the outline of the tears a little more crisp. From far away they look fine, but up close they look like they could use a little work.
