19. Concentration #4

Artist Statement

The fourth piece in my concentration series, I focus on the same things: ghostly figures in the woods. Sticking with my most common materials of ink and watercolor, a noticeable thing that I did change this time around was the ghostly figures themselves. In previous pieces, my figures have been solid black. But this time around I tried to make them more transparent by using watercolor to fill in their forms instead of just ink. Though I did like the theory of the idea itself, the final product isn't something I would say I'm excited about. Without the solid black, I feel the overall piece is just washed out since I don't have that contrast anymore. Though I am glad that I at least tried this different style, I don't think I'll be revisiting it. Future pieces that I'm now planning only including solid black figures.

Another thing I decided to change up in this piece was by border itself. I usually stick with basic rectangular and square shapes, but this time I decided to try a triangle. The title that I gave this piece being "The Portal", I wanted it to feel like that. That you're looking through a scrap of space into another world and my piece is what you see on the other side. Because of that, I felt that a plain old square or rectangle wouldn't work. This idea, compared to my watercolor figures one, I thought came out interesting and I would be interested in doing for complex border shapes in the future.

Overall my feelings are kinda "eh." with this piece. There are some things I really like (border and overall composition) and other things I don't (figures). Because of that, I feel as though I will be revisiting this piece in the future. Though I don't know everything that I might adjust, my prime interest would be changing the ghostly figures to a solid black.
