This assignment is apart of our concentration unit. Looking through previous pieces of artwork that we made earlier in the year, we identified common themes that we saw; before then developing a concentration theme that we would center our future pieces around. Though I will admit, I never really actually decided what my concentration would be, so for this piece, I just decided to use common styles and themes that I had already used previously and could connect with my other pieces; those being portrait style artwork and ink-work. Using a regular bold ink pen, I was rather simple with my line-work. Though I've never used this type of style in school art assignments, it is a common style in my sketchbook; one that I actually enjoy very much. Even with such simple line-work, I find that I'm able to create a lot of texture and depth with my subjects.
This assignment didn't evolve that much, as I was looking at a few different face references when creating these individuals; so I was able to pick out features that I liked and create the portraits that you see before yourself now. Another thing I like about working with this style is how straightforward it can be; leaving little room for mistakes as the technique is fairly simple to follow, but still comes out aesthetically pleasing. I actually like working with faces and study facial features, and with keep that common theme of portrait style pieces, I was both able to expand on what I find interesting and keep with a common theme.
Overall I really like how these two pieces came out. The overall line-work really pleases me and I really like how the lines themselves overlap each other. Honestly I probably wont change these pieces in the future, just because i think the simplicity works for them.
