24. Environmental Advocacy Project

For this assignment we were tasked with creating a piece, or multiple, that described a certain environmental issue that we felt should be broadcasted in some way to the general public. Brainstorming through a few ideas, the one that I actually passed in was piece calling attention to all the trash that is in our oceans. The mediums that used being just black ink on paper, though the color scheme is non-existent, I really like the black and white contrast with everything. And with no color in the scene I was instead able to focus time on adding small details to the trash and the fishes that you see scattered around in this piece.

The overlaying of the trash over the fish was really added to showcase how these creatures are literally being swallowed up, disappearing from view, with all the trash that surrounds them. Just like millions of other animals that call the ocean home, their lives are being severely impacted by the trash that is finding its way into the oceans. Food stocks taking a hit while other animals find themselves wrapped up with this trash; in many of these situations death always seems to be on the playing field. Though I’m pretty proud of how this piece came out in the end, it wasn't the first idea nor piece that I had. I had originally completed a movie style poster that took inspiration from the 1970’s movies color scheme and dystopian rhetoric to show a society without bees, but after an unfortunate accident with some ice tea, i had to scrap that plan and do something else. Overall, even though this was my second piece, I really like how it came out. As I already mentioned above I like how the contrast between the black and white came out, along with the finer details. The only thing that I would think about changing about this piece would probably be the lettering. Though the phrase is readable, it could be better; my lines getting a bit wonky after a while. But besides that though, I think the whole thing came out pretty good.
