For this piece, we were tasked with creating something centered around or including an ink splatter. Taking from the concept "make something of your mistakes", this piece was a way to practice both our thought process and artistic extension. The materials that I used in this piece were fairly basic, as sticking with the already black ink blob on the piece, the only material that I used was black pen ink. I also actually cut down my original paper too, as I felt I didn't need that much canvas space.
When you brainstorming ideas for a piece like this, the main focus is to create something centered around the supposed 'mistake' on the page. In the beginning, I went through many sketch ideas, trying to find something I would both like and would fit with the ink blob on the paper. At one point I was considering making the ink blob a dancer, but after deciding against that and instead taking the tree root, I believe that was the only evolution that this piece made. Everything else in the piece was thought out.
Looking at this piece, you would first assume that there is a lot of symbolism in it; with all the mystic details and such. But in all honesty, I didn't really think of much when I was creating this piece. Pulling common themes that I myself enjoyed, they all just kinda fit together in the end; creating a piece that had a very ‘fantasy’ like vibe to it. Overall I like how this piece came out, especially considering that it was one of my first pieces of the year. Getting back into the role of art, I believe this assignment was a good start. But if I did decide to go back and revise this piece, I would probably try to add color (or just a pop of color) somewhere. Even though I do enjoy the simple black and white contrast, I believing adding color would bring a new sort of dimension to this piece.
