Shadows

"shadowy night"

This image is one of me standing on a porch gazing out into the night sky. The image is composed so that I appear very small to the vast, dark, and shadowy world around me. Shadows wrap all around me from the porch light and the shadow cast by the railing. I took this image by opening up a window across my house, setting the camera on the windowsill, setting the timer, and running out to the porch. I set it to have a low ISO to keep the image darker and bring out the shadows.

The main elements of the image is far distance, some silhouettes, and very low key lighting. Originally, my image didn't have anyone standing in it, but it seemed uninteresting and devoid of meaning, so I made the effort to have a subject.

The meaning behind the image is to evoke the dark unknown that the world holds, and capture the peace of a night when a fresh layer of snow has just covered the area. It reminds me of the Robert Frost poem Walking Through the Woods on a Snowy Evening. If I were to change something about this image, I would find a way to create more geometric shadows, even to position myself where I would cast a clear shadow on the ground.
