Reflection

"BOOT-Y"

This picture shows the LL Bean boot reflected in a mirror that is leaning up against a tree in front of LL Bean. I took this picture by heading to LL Bean with a mirror in tow, and setting it up at various angles trying to get a good angle on the boot where I wasn't reflected in the mirror. This was challenging because I was essentially trying to take two well-composed pictures at the same time. I had to make the reflection well balanced within the frame of the mirror, and make an interesting landscape outside of the mirror.

This photo uses high horizon line, rule of thirds, sharp focus, and framing in it. I think the framing is the most interesting part, because it is the main focus of the image and the ornate frame of the mirror is a neat contrast to the fairly "natural" setting it is placed in. This project underwent many changes as I kept trying to find the right setting and angle for the mirror.

This project relates to my life because I live in Freeport and LL Bean is somewhere in Freeport. On a deeper level, however, I don't go to LL Bean very often, and it ends up being somewhere indirectly related to my life, in the way that the boot is indirectly photographed through the reflection. I find myself more connected to the rest of Freeport, which is shown outside the mirror. If I were to revise this project, I might try to get less snow in the picture, as it makes a lot of uninteresting negative space.
