Relationships

"Boats boats boats!"

This image shows the relationship between the boats in the harbor and the water they rest on, supporting their existence. I took this image at dusk at the harbor where I have taken so many images, and then printed it in the darkroom, where I was dismayed by the inability for the print to capture the beauty of the lighting and reflection that the digital image did.

This image uses formal balance, leading lines, and repetition. Originally, I wanted to show a more concentrated relationship between a single boat and the water, but I loved the repeated reflection of the boats and I was having a hard time finding a single boat that could have a strong composition.

This photo displays the important buoyancy that the water provides for boats, and how that is a relationship that is often glazed over and not thought of very often. Water is very important to the existence of boats, obviously. If I were to redo this, I would print it again to show a better black and white contrast rather than a gray haze covering the image.
