Color Selection

During a walk-around of the school, I looked for places that were rich in color in one particular place so that I could isolate it when editing. I thought the trash can would be an interesting subject because of it's bright red lid. Against a white wall it wouldn't be incredibly apparent that the rest of the image was in black and white, so I put Griffin on top of the trash can to make the image more interesting and contrast with the bright red. By taking the picture with the subject in the center, there is a sense of formal balance. The image is in sharp focus. Next, I found the bashed hamburger piñata in Mr. Heathco's room and put it on Griffin's head. My intent was to create a balance between happiness and dullness by putting the smiling hamburger in a dull black and white setting, but making Griffin's blank face the only colorful part. This image also deals with formal balance, but more importantly the framing that the window in the burger creates. Lastly, I got a candid photo of Mr. Heathco grading tests with the McDougal cup behind him. The intent was to contrast the dull work environment in the afternoon with the shiny trophy. I employed the rule of thirds, sharp focus, some high key lighting, and a relatively far distance. The whole project was meant to capture some of the light or color in a dull environment and pushing that idea with the use of color selection.
