The subject of this image is Josh Burke, who, very frustrated with school, has just popped in his ear buds to chill during advisory. He appears grumpy and dark because I asked him to take a portrait photograph of him when all he wanted to do was block out school. The work was chosen from a roll of portraits, but I chose this one because of its mood, subject, and the selective focus that made the picture look really good. Selective focus and the rule of thirds are the most prominent compositional techniques, with Josh appearing in the right third, and Greg, the onlooker, appearing in the left third. Originally I was going to make a more complicated project that would include a quote or something along with the image, but I decided this one spoke for itself without any additional clutter to block out the range of values and composition. If I were to change this image, I would make it slightly lighter so that Josh's grumpy face is more visible.
