Halie is a very busy volunteer!
At Christmas Angel Store-Perry County United Way she assists families in need to come and shop for free for their children for Christmas gifts. All store items are free of charge and made by donations. Halie feels every family needs to be able to feel special at Christmas and no child should go without at this time of year. Halie and her son also ring bells at their local Wal-Mart every Christmas for the Salvation Army. She says it’s important to teach her son to give of his time to serve others and make a difference in someone's life who may be struggling.
Halie serves on the board of the Spencer County Substance Abuse Council. Their mission is to prevent alcohol and other substance abuse by financially supporting programs which meet the needs of county residents, serving as a resource for intervention, and sponsoring community events to increase awareness of ATOD issues. Halie uses her experiences as a woman in recovery, working as a recovery professional to guide community leaders in decisions that impact assistance to substance abuse programs and grants. Halie also writes to receive grants for her community mental health clinic for substance abuse programming. She has won two grants for her clinic.
As an official member of Purdue Red Cross Volunteers, she's supported various community initiatives and in local weather events.
Halie serves as a mentor for Key Club and as the Volunteer Pageant Director for Miss/Ms. Switzerfest, a local service-based pageant. Additionally, she proudly represent Indiana as a past titleholder for Pure International Pageants, where she holds the titles of Ms. Indiana and Ms. Hoosier State, and had the honor of bearing the Indiana flag.
Some of Halie's recent volunteer efforts include filling local food boxes to assist families in need, assisting with the painting of the local floodwall mural, "Mental Health Butterfly," to raise awareness of mental health, and volunteering with a local horse therapy group, helping individuals find healing and growth through equine therapy.
This past October, Halie was invited as the keynote speaker for Spencer County's Heritage Hills High School and South Spencer High School during Red Ribbon Week. She shared her story and the message of how shared experiences bring hope and connection, especially in addiction.
Halie says, “I am a woman, and mother in recovery, and also a family member of people in recovery. I believe in the impact that reducing the stigma surrounding recovery can make, especially when the community supports the recovering individuals.”
