Shannon Long volunteers for the Girl Scouts of Northern Illinois as the Primary Leader for a mixed age group of 25 girls. She originally started volunteering because there were not enough volunteers to start a troop in her area for Kindergarten and First Graders. Shannon feels it's “important to give back not only to your community but to our youth, as they will be our leaders of tomorrow.”

Shannon shared that her troop recently had their Annual Hometown Hero Event. They collected donated cookies through Girl Scout cookie sales for 3+ local Active Military persons. The locals all loved getting involved, as did media outlets. She says it’s important to help raise awareness so that “we can give back a little bit of home to those that are not able to be home during the holidays.”
