MS in Higher Education - Student Affairs

Jessica Bellerby has been volunteering as a Disaster Health Services Nurse for the Red Cross for five years. Her volunteerism journey started when she was 16 years old, watching her cousins volunteer their time as firemen and EMT. Jessica says that’s how she knew she wanted to serve her community like the rest of her family.

After becoming an LPN, she started to look for opportunities to volunteer as a nurse. In 2017 when Hurricane Harvey made landfall in Texas, an all call was put out for volunteers to deploy. This all call happened on a Wednesday and Jessica was on a plane Friday morning to Austin. She was assigned to a shelter for those who were evacuated. Jessica says she learned so much over those 10 days. Most of the clients she served by listening, trying to understand how they survived their worst day, and just being there when they needed someone.

Jessica uses a lot of the skills she learned while volunteering in her current role in Student Services in an LPN school in Philadelphia. She says, “I enjoy doing all those things so much that I wanted to expand my education to help me serve my students better. That’s why I am pursuing my Masters in Science Higher Education - Student Affairs.”
