Doris completed the Human Services Certificate in Child and Family Services, and is currently in the Bachelor of Science in Human Services in Youth/Family Services and Administration. Doris is a volunteer outreach coordinator at West Texas Homeless Network and volunteers with the United Way of Abilene.

Doris started the United Way volunteer position through her internship open elective course (AS495). She chose the United Way because they work with all of the nonprofit agencies in her community. During the internship, she started as a case manager on the disaster team. The community had recently been hit by a tornado and was coming together to aid those that needed relocation, repairs and in some cases a complete rebuild. Next, she was given her own project to facilitate at a low-income housing unit bringing in different agencies to speak with the residents and talk about the programs they offer and ways they could help. After the internship ended, Doris continued working with the United Way of Abilene in several capacities.

The West Texas Homeless Network’s goal is to help and rehouse the homeless in the community. As an outreach coordinator with the organization, she hosts a monthly meeting at the Abilene Public Library where the homeless or those that may become homeless from loss of job, loss of family or housing meet for coffee and donuts to talk with agencies about the services available to them and receive immediate help with housing, medical, mental, disabilities, veterans benefits, clothing or whatever their needs are at the time.
