By the end of this week
I have completed my DOH work and have recieved feedback on the first half of my assessment work
I understand and have begun explaining the personal, interpersonal and societal implications for my NZ health issue (Short & Long term)
I understand the difference between equity and equality
I understand how to devise strategies to address the DOH and promote equitable outcomes
Explore your understanding about equity vs equality
In this image we see two clear examples of equity and equality. Consider where you see instances of equality within society today and the impact of this on everyone. Do we have exmaples where we see equity? What are they? What are the outcomes for all people involved?
Consider peoples attitudes and values towards equity?
Why is it such an issue?
When exploring your strategies they need to address all three of your determinants of health
They must promote the idea of equity NOT equality. If we give everyone $100 we still end up as the image on the left suggests. We need to have an understnadning that when we devise our strategies we need to consider those who are in need and how we can raise them up to be at the same level as others.
EG. If our issue is alcohol abuse
We have discussed the political DOH and the fact that there are so many bottle stoes close by and high populated in certain areas as a result of a lack of regualtion and restrictions on where they can open these store.
Strategy: The government could make a change to legislation that would not allow a liquor store to open within 5-10 of another store. This way it reduces access to alcohol stores and we see less highly populated areas promoting high levels of alcohol use.
