Materials:
Warm water
Sugar
Pipettes/dropper/turkey baster
Food colouring
Spoons (to stir)
Clear cups/containers
Fill 4 clear containers with 1 cup of warm tap water. Add a different colour to each container.
Add 2 tablespoons of granulated sugar to the first cup, 4 tablespoons of sugar to the 2nd cup, 6 tablespoons of sugar to the 3rd cup, and 8 tablespoons of sugar to the 4th cup. (Keep track of how much sugar was added to each one.)
Stir each container with a different spoon to ensure you don't change the density.
By the 2nd or 3rd cup, you will likely not be able to dissolve all of the sugar. Microwave the container for 20 sec. at a time until you are able to fully stir it in.
Starting with the water that has the most sugar in it, slowly add it to a clear container with the pipette/dropper/turkey baster.
Using a new pipette (if you only have 1, clean it before switching colours), carefully add the second colour (the one with 6 tablespoons of sugar). The best technique is to hold the tip of the pipette slightly above the surface and go slow. If you rush, the colours will all mix together.
Continue adding layers until you have added all 4, with the most sugar on the bottom layer, and the least sugar on the top layer.
Did it work for you? Did you get layers of different colours? Or did it all mix together?
Extension:
Instead of sugar, try this experiment with different things dissolved in the water. Does it still work? What happens if all of your cups have a different solid dissolved in it?
Ideas of things you can try:
baking soda
cornstarch
salt
flour
