Math with Cereal

Step 1:

Grab a small handful of 2 or 3 kinds of cereal (mix them up). If you choose something like Fruitloops you can use just 1 cereal.

Step 2:

A) Sort the cereal

How did you sort them?

B) Count how much you have in each pile

How many do you have?

How did you count them? By1's, 2's, 5's or 10's.

Step 3:

Make Patterns!

If your child is new to this concept see if they can make an AB pattern first and then progress to other patterns from there!

Ask your child to name the patterns that they have made. How many ways can they name it? You can name a pattern many ways: For example ABAB or honeycomb, cheerio, honeycomb cheerio, big, small, big, small etc.
