32 Oz. Mason Jar
Black Paint, Sharpies or Markers, Buttons, or Foam Paper
Orange Foam Paper, Felt or Paper
Ribbon for Scarf
Glue (or other adhesive as needed)
12″ Plastic Rulers
Decorate a mason jar to look like a snowman
Wrap a piece of ribbon around the jar towards the bottom. Criss cross each piece, glue and glue at the ends to make it look like a scarf.
Cut a small triangle from a piece of orange paper and glue it towards the top front centre of the jar.
Use the black paint or markers to draw eyes and a mouth by the nose.
Fill the jar up with snow, wipe the outside dry and bring it inside the house.
Place a ruler into the jar and press it down to the bottom.
You can set your snowman aside (maybe not right next to a heating vent) and watch what happens over time. Check on it periodically (can make a specific time check in like every 5 mins or 10 mins) and have the kids jot down the time elapsed and the new measurement. Record the final measurement as well.
you can fill multiple jars and place them in different spots in the house to determine the fastest melting spot in the house
You can try the experiment with different kinds of snow (wet & heavy, light & fluffy)
Set up 2 jars with equal amounts of snow - sprinkle salt on top of one jar - which one melts faster?
