On Sunday, June 2nd, members of the Lourdes Chapter of the National Honor Society (and a guest!) worked with the Friends of the Chemung River to clean up a section of the bank of the Chemung River. The group picked up trash on the north side of the river on a stretch that started behind the Clarion Inn and then worked its way west, ending under the walking bridge at Lake Street. The group found many interesting things, including computer keyboards, clothes, blankets, a wheel, a broken fishing pole, and of course, lots of wrappers, discarded bottles, and cigarettes. They learned that 60% of the drinking water in Elmira comes from the Chemung River, so cleaning up the banks really helps the community!
