Beginning in 1865, Memorial Day honored those who died while serving in the military. On May 1, 1865, freed slaves in Charleston, South Carolina, founded Memorial Day to memorialize Union troops who were interred in a mass grave in a Confederate prison camp. They dug up the bones and toiled for two weeks to properly bury them as a thank you for fighting for their freedom. This year, Memorial Day is observed on May 30, 2022, and is honored with parades and picnics in both small towns and large cities. This year, Elmira City School District students have not only Memorial Day off from school, but also a snow day give-back, allowing them to spend extra time with family and begin studying for their final exams. Students at Notre Dame will return to class on June 1st, with ten days of teaching remaining before exams begin.

Prom was a blast for all the Crusaders. This year it was held at the Ill Eagle. Junior Prom King and Queen were given to Ella Chicone and Camille Aureilhan and Senior Prom King and Queen were given to Steven Gough and Caroline Visellli. Prom had delicious food, a photobooth and a Polaroid station. Nicki Lisi says prom was “Out of this world”. Students were enjoying the starry night.
