Vegetarians rejoice! If you don’t want to be responsible for the death of animals but have always wanted to try meat, there may just be a solution to your problem: lab-grown meat! Produced in bioreactors–an apparatus in which a biological reaction or change occurs–and then combined with plant-based ingredients, lab-grown meat is the next “big thing” in the culinary world. It provides a cleaner, drug-free, and cruelty-free alternative while also cutting down on the impact of industrial livestock production on the climate. What’s not to love? As for the taste, it’s said to have the same taste as meat (after all, it comes from meat itself), and the texture, which is the hardest part to replicate, is extremely similar to the real thing.
Lab-grown meat is exactly what it sounds like–cells are taken from an animal (this is not harmful), and then plant nutrients are supplied to these cells in order to let them grow. At the moment, Singapore is the first and only company to have approved the product, but other countries are sure to follow suit due to the great advantages it provides. While this cultivated meat will not become mainstream until it can reach the same cost as conventional meat, experts predict that by 2040, most meat will not come from dead animals! With some scientists saying cutting meat consumption is the best single environmental action an individual can take, perhaps lab-grown meat will also be the solution to earth’s climate change issues.
