After School Counselor
How is a senior internship helping me? How is this Course different from other classes?
My senior internship is helping me bridge the gap between classroom theory and real-world application. It allows me to gain hands-on experience, develop industry-specific skills, and build professional relationships that will be valuable in my future career. The workplace learning class complements this experience by teaching essential skills such as time management, communication, and problem-solving in a professional context. Unlike traditional classes, which focus more on academic learning, the workplace learning class emphasizes practical application, preparing me to adapt to workplace dynamics, work effectively in teams, and take on more responsibility. It’s a unique opportunity to apply what I’ve learned while also growing in areas that are crucial for success in any career.
How does this class help me?

The structured environment has encouraged me to stay focused and motivated, pushing me to meet deadlines and handle tasks with greater responsibility. Additionally, collaborating with peers and receiving constructive feedback has sharpened my teamwork and adaptability, making me more confident in my ability to perform in professional setting.
A day in my job: for the YMCA program everyday starts about the same. The day begins with a flurry of activity as I set up for another fun and safe afternoon with the kids. The first thing I do is lay out the name tags, making sure each one is easy to see so they know the exact spot to sit in . I greet them with a smile, helping them get settled into the space. As they arrive, I sign each child in, making sure that everyone is accounted for and ready for a great afternoon. Once all the children are seated, we begin our core values. Then when all the kiddos are checked in , and core values are done, it’s snack time, my favorite part of the day. I distribute snacks, making sure that everyone has something to munch on while they chat with their friends and unwind for a bit. Once the snacks are handed out and the kids are finished, the real fun begins. Whether it's a game of tag, building with blocks, or diving into a craft project, I’m always active and engaged, playing alongside the kids while keeping an eye on the group. It’s important that everyone stays engaged and follows the rules, so I keep a close watch to make sure no one is running inside, being too rough, or wandering off. I try to create an environment where they can be themselves but also feel safe and supported. Safety is always my top priority, so I make sure that everyone is playing in a way that’s fun but still respectful of others.Throughout the afternoon, I also help resolve any small conflicts that come up, offering gentle guidance when kids need it and making sure they understand the importance of taking turns, being kind, and following the group rules. By the time parents start arriving for pick-up, the space is filled with laughter, happy chatter, and the satisfaction of knowing the kids had a positive, fulfilling after-school experience. I say goodbye to each child by name, knowing that tomorrow will bring another round of games, laughter, and meaningful connections.
