Teaching Assistant
How does this class help me?
This class has helped me in multiple areas. Being in this class has allowed me to be one of the first MPE teaching interns. I am a Kindergarten teacher's assistant who works with a quad of teachers and helps with other things around the school like car pick-up and recess duty. I have learned how to grow my confidence in the workplace and take the steps to be ready for a career.
How is this Course different from other classes?
This course is not like any other class I have seen in High School. In this course, I get work experience by being able to go to work for class credit. Not only does this class allow students to get a job and be paid during the school year, but it also prepares them for their career out of High School. I have learned how to write a cover letter and how to create a resume, which will help me with my career later on in life.
A day in my job
A day at my job looks different every day. Here is an example of one of my days:
I arrive at MPE Kindergarten in Mahomet Illinois about 12:45 PM every day. I mostly stay in Cindy Krumwiede or Rachel Robert’s rooms. When I get there the students are just coming in from recess after lunch, so I get Mrs. Roberts's students from outside and bring them to the carpet. Students are dismissed from the carpet to get their iPads for “WIN” (What I Need) time. WIN time, is time used to practice their ABCs and counting. Then, I go to Mrs. Krumwiede’s classroom and call the kids’ names to put their orange folders away. These students are also engaged in WIN time, so I call students who need extra practice with letter tracing and I help them do that with them until last recess. I am on recess duty, so I take Mrs. Krumwiede's students out for recess. When the whistle blows, I bring the students inside. Depending on the day, I read to the students or help Mrs. Roberts's class, until dismissal. Car pick-up is next, so I ensure the students are quiet and on task. After the students are dismissed, I head to the lunch room to get the kindergarten lunch cards and put Mrs. Krumwiede’s and Mrs. Roberts's lunch cards away. Then I cut out paper or make copies until it is time for me to leave at 3:45.
