David Brearley High School has welcomed a new addition to its extracurricular lineup this year: the Model United Nations (Model UN) club. Led by President Bryanna Rivera, Vice President Jericho Miralles, and advised by Ms. Murphy, the club will offer students an opportunity to expand their global awareness while practicing public speaking in a structured, debate-style setting. At its core, Model UN is an educational simulation in which students take on the roles of delegates representing different countries. By researching and collaborating, members discuss pressing global issues; some topics include climate change, human rights, and international security. The goal is to mirror the work of the actual United Nations, encouraging students to think critically and diplomatically about world affairs.
In discussing his vision for the club, Vice President Jericho Miralles stated, “We want members to become more knowledgeable about the world.” Miralles also noted that, in many cases, high school students aren’t aware of what’s happening in other countries. His goal is for Model UN to help its members learn and grow—not just in public speaking and confidence, but also in understanding global issues.
Under the guidance of Ms. Murphy, the club plans to attend local conferences in the future where members will represent various nations and engage in formal debates with students from other schools. In addition, its leaders hope to inspire more students to participate and to discover the importance of international awareness. For now, the main goal for club leadership is to get the club up and running and to encourage student membership.
