Spirit Week Student Feedback

Our most recent Spirit Week brought a mix of energy and creativity to Brearley, with themed days adding a fun twist to the school week. For the week of March 9–13, the days were: Quarter Zip & Matcha vs. Nike Tech, Concert Tee, Pajama Day, Dynamic Duo, and Dress Like It’s 2016. Here’s what students had to say about it and ways it could be improved for next time.
In a survey, many people found this Spirit Week less fun than usual. Unlike normal years, the days were described as “mediocre,” causing most people to rate it 3/5; there were also a few 4s. Even though some students enjoyed parts of the week, most viewed it as merely okay rather than memorable. When asked to explain their ratings, students pointed to the same reason: low student participation. Other than Pajama Day and Dress Like It’s 2016, which some respondents highlighted as successful, the other days suffered from poor turnout and were described as “boring.” Few people were walking around school taking advantage of the day’s theme. Even something as simple as Dynamic Duo wasn’t done very much, which practically killed the vibe.
Students also shared ideas for future Spirit Weeks to potentially spark more participation with ideas that aren’t coming from teachers or Google. One student in particular said they wanted something “fun and DIFFERENT,” since many recent ideas have been repeated (Student 3). Popular suggestions included color wars, “anything but a backpack,” dress-as-your-type, and Culture Day. Although some of these repeat past themes, students believed they would be simple ways for everyone to show their Brearley pride.
Knowing how many students felt about the low participation last Spirit Week, hopefully whoever is in charge of planning future Spirit Weeks will take these suggestions into consideration. Maybe the next Spirit Week will be more memorable and fun!
