As the holiday season approaches, so do the movies! There are many amazing Christmas films available, from classics like Dr. Seuss’s How the Grinch Stole Christmas and Frosty to newer titles such as The Christmas Chronicles and Daddy’s Home. The big question is: which movies are most recommended to watch during the holidays? Below are some personally great choices you should watch.
Dr. Seuss’s How the Grinch Stole Christmas — An all-time favorite! This story follows the Grinch, who lives high in the mountains above Whoville. He is the only Whoville resident who despises Christmas, and no one truly understands why. The Grinch decides to steal their Christmas to make the Whos as miserable as possible. There are multiple versions of this classic tale: the original 1966 version narrated by Boris Karloff, the live-action Jim Carrey version from 2000, and a modern Illumination animated film. If you love classic holiday films, this one is 100% recommended for your watch list.
National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation — As Christmastime arrives, Clark Griswold is determined to have a perfect family Christmas, so he fusses over his wife, Ellen, and their children, Rusty and Audrey. He tries to make sure everything is in order, including the tree and the house decorations. However, things quickly go awry. His cousin Eddie and Eddie’s family show up uninvited and start living in their camper on the Griswold property. Even worse, Clark’s employer reneges on the holiday bonus he needs. This movie is full of comedy and family fun. If you want a film to bring lots of laughs this season, watch this one.
Elf — As a baby, Buddy accidentally ends up in Santa’s sack and is transported to the North Pole, where he is raised in Santa’s workshop. He grows up among elves despite being much taller than the others. When Buddy learns from Papa Elf that he has a father, he is sent on a quest to leave the North Pole and reunite with him. Along the way, Buddy discovers an unexpected family, adjusts to human life, and finds a possible romance. This is a family-friendly comedy for all ages.
A Dennis the Menace Christmas — Young Dennis Mitchell, known for his accidental mischief, tries to cheer up his grumpy neighbor, Mr. Wilson, and lift his holiday spirit. Despite Dennis’s best intentions, his antics cause damage, and Mr. Wilson’s spirit is broken. Three Christmas Angels (Past, Present, and Future) intervene to help save the holiday for everyone. Similar to the classic A Christmas Carol but with fun twists, this film is delightful — once you watch it, you won’t want to stop.
The Christmas Chronicles — A Netflix film. Siblings Teddy and Kate Pierce plan a way to capture Santa on Christmas Eve. When their plan goes awry and Santa loses his reindeer, they must team up with Saint Nick to save Christmas before it’s too late. This fantasy story wraps the true meaning of Christmas into an entertaining film. If you have Netflix and love fantasy, this movie is for you.
