New Science Hallways and Classrooms

Throughout last year and over the summer, the district has paid for renovations to help improve our schools. From expanding the playground at Harding to new turf and track, and an entirely new hallway with science classrooms and middle school classrooms, it is absolutely amazing how much work, money, and time our community has put into making this school a better place and helping Brearley shine brighter!
Over the years at David Brearley, the science rooms used to be located upstairs for high school students, where middle school rooms were also located, causing high school and middle school students to become quite mixed throughout the day. However, with these new renovations, they decided to give the science rooms upstairs to the middle schoolers and build new ones for the high school in order to keep the middle and high school students more separated. Now, all of the high schoolers take their science classes in the new building added to the main building, and they are absolutely astonishing rooms.
Many students are truly enjoying this new science experience in these rooms! Below are some students' personal opinions about these new science labs.
Rafaela Aguirre Carrillo (Junior):
Q: What is your favorite thing about the new science rooms?
A: My favorite thing about the new science rooms is the chairs. They are very comfortable to sit in and learn!
Q: How do you feel this is helping to improve science overall as a subject?
A: I feel like it is helping improve science overall since there are now more classrooms specifically for those classes, like zoology and medicinal chemistry! They even opened an AP biology class, which is pretty amazing.
Emilia Pelesz (Senior):
Q: What was your reaction when you first saw the rooms?
A: My initial reaction was kind of disappointing because the hallway’s windows were tiny and didn’t let in a lot of natural light. But when I entered one of the rooms, I actually really liked it. The style was cool and felt very new and fresh, and it really changed my mind about everything.
Q: How does learning in the new science hall compare to the old ones?
A: Learning in the new rooms isn’t much different from the old ones, but I really like how the lights can dim. Dimmed lights help minimize some headaches I get from the overhead lighting, so they help me focus better.
Having this amazing new educational hallway has been very beneficial for everyone in the Brearley community. From the new equipment to the better quality of tables, these rooms help positively reinforce students, allowing them to enjoy learning science more. Also, there's some science equipment that is now officially usable in these new rooms, including Bunsen burners, because there is now gas in the science rooms! All of these new additions to our school will turn out to be positive and help bring more people to science and all of the specific subsets that they can learn more about.
