What better way to start the new year than with some movie recommendations! There are so many new films out there — which are the best? A wide range of genres is popular right now, making it hard to decide what to watch. Below are some recommendations to start 2026 off right.
Wicked: For Good — The sequel follows Wicked’s second act of the musical, split into two separate movies. Elphaba has gone off to find the animals and help rescue the Wizard. Unfortunately, Madame Morrible and the Wizard have made Oz aware that she’s the “Wicked Witch of the West,” falsely framing Elphaba. After she refused to join the Wizard, she decides to do what she thinks is right — but will she succeed? Wicked: For Good contains many plot twists, so if you haven’t seen the musical, be aware. This was one of the most popular movies at the end of 2025, and if you’re a theater fan, this one is for you. If you haven’t watched the first Wicked movie, make sure to watch it before this sequel.
SpongeBob SquarePants: The Search for SquarePants — This movie adaptation of the popular Nickelodeon show follows SpongeBob and his best friend Patrick Star on a quest to prove SpongeBob’s bravery to Mr. Krabs. SpongeBob follows the Flying Dutchman, a mysterious ghost pirate, on an adventure that takes him to the deepest depths of the ocean. If you love Nickelodeon and want a family-friendly film, this is it.
Playdate — This movie follows two fathers who live in a suburban area and are suddenly forced to go on the run from ruthless mercenaries. Brian is a recently unemployed accountant, and Jeff is a mysterious stay-at-home dad who is more than he seems. The plot escalates quickly into a violent, nonsensical thriller involving assassins and soccer moms gone wild, all while Brian tries to survive and figure out why he's being targeted. If you love action movies with surprising plot twists, this one is for you.
