On December 8, 2025, the Kenilworth Board of Education accepted the resignation of Mr. John Perillo, principal of David Brearley High School. This announcement came after Mr. Perillo had been on a leave of absence for the four weeks leading up to the meeting. During his absence, the school was overseen by Superintendent Jeremy Davies and members of the district leadership team. Despite the lack of a permanent leader to handle day-to-day functions at Brearley, instruction and student activities continued smoothly. Many major school events also proceeded without interruption, including the annual flag football game and the interclass games that take place each November. These events helped maintain a sense of normalcy at Brearley despite not having a principal.
At the same December 8 meeting, the Board of Education approved Mr. Brian Luciani as interim principal of David Brearley High School. Mr. Luciani is a familiar face to many students and staff. Last year he stepped in for Mr. Perillo during his transition to Brearley at the beginning of the year. He also filled in for former Assistant Principal Mrs. Pavelchak during her maternity leave. Because of his experience in the building, he is well suited to maintain continuity at Brearley. He already knows the daily operations that a new interim principal would otherwise need time to learn.
Mr. Luciani will remain interim principal through April 13. In the meantime, Superintendent Davies has said that the district will begin the search for a permanent principal with input from multiple stakeholder groups, including staff, parents, and students. These groups will have opportunities to contribute their perspectives to the process starting in January. Then, in early spring, the district anticipates formally hiring a long-term principal for Brearley.
As Brearley moves forward, the school community remains focused on academic success. With the half-year point approaching, having a familiar interim principal in place will bring stability to Brearley. Students and staff are looking ahead with hope and confidence during this period of change.
