Our “Measuring With Objects and Shapes” will begin kindergarten students’ first study of measurement. In kindergarten, students should use terms such as longer/shorter, more/less, taller/shorter, and heavier/lighter to compare objects. Rulers and other common measuring tools are introduced later in second grade. We will begin introducing students to geometry. Early introductions to geometry include a basic understanding and ability to name shapes and to be able to describe a physical object (door) using the name of a shape (rectangle). At home use spatial words such as above, beyond, under, next to, etc.
Examine the characteristics of basic shapes (circle, square, triangle, rectangle) in this video about comparing shapes.
These are vocabulary words that students will be exposed to throughout the unit.
