Unit 1 Overview:

Fourth graders will focus on place value to round multi-digit whole numbers to any place and express multi-digit whole numbers using base-ten numerals, number names and expanded form. Students will recognize that in a multi-digit whole number, a digit in one place represents ten times what it represents in the place to its right, and work with numbers less than or equal to one million. This knowledge will be used in computation of addition and subtraction. Students will be introduced to the strategy of the Standard Algorithm for addition (subtraction in later unit). They will be solving multi-step problems involving addition and subtraction.

1. Students will recognize in any multi-digit whole number a digit in one place represents ten times as much as it represents in its place to the right. (NBT.A.1)
2. Students will read and write multi-digit whole numbers using base ten numerals, number names, and expanded form and compare multi-digit whole numbers using symbols. (NBT.A.2)
3. Students will use place value understanding to round multi-digit whole numbers to any place by using models including number lines and the hundreds chart . (NBT.A.3)
4. Students will add multi- digit whole numbers using the standard algorithm. (NBT.B.4)
5. Students will solve multi-step problems involving addition and subtraction with the unknown in any location. (OA.A.3)
