This unit is all about using the multiplication and division understandings from previous years. Students need to apply their basic fact and place value understanding to multiply and divide large numbers. Teachers must take the time to make sure students have a solid whole number place value understanding in order to move from this unit to the next. They need to be able to notate and explain the partial products and the regroupings, for multiplication. Students will continue to understand how to think about large numbers as being multiplied “that many times” and when dividing large numbers, that quantity as being divided or put into “that many groups.” This understanding along with place value knowledge helps students make reasonable estimations. NF.B.3 is in this unit so as you are working with division of large numbers and get a remainder, the discussion of what to do with the remainder, how to interpret the remainder and in certain contexts, and read the remainder as a fraction one can explain what part of a whole is left over.
