Grade 5 Unit 3

Conceptual Understanding of Adding and Subtracting Fractions with Unlike Denominators

Unit 3 Overview:

Using the line plot as a context, students will explore how to add and subtract fractions with unlike denominators. They come with the understanding of how to add and subtract with like denominators and how to find equivalent fractions, they now need time to put these two skills together. The line plot is not a new concept so using this data display to make meaning and interpret will give a strong context for adding and subtracting. This also allows for students to experience adding and subtracting more than 2 fractions and to solve multi step problems.

  1. Students will add or subtract two fractions or mixed numbers with unlike denominators using only fraction with denominators of 2, 4, 5, 8 or 10 in such a way to produce an equivalent sum or difference with like denominators. (NF.A.1)
  2. Students will use benchmark fractions and number sense of fractions to estimate mentally and assess the reasonableness of answers in real world problems. (NF.A.2)
  3. Students will make and interpret a line plot to display a data set of measurements of fractions with denominators of 2, 4 and 8. (MD.B.2)
