Unit 7
Reasoning with Fractional Quantities (20 Days)
Unit 7 Overview:
Unit 7 Overview:
In unit 7, students will use models to generate simple equivalent fractions with denominators 2,3,4,6, and 8. They will also use the symbols <,>, = in order to compare fractions with the same numerator or the same denominator. Students will measure lengths using rulers marked with halves and fourths of an inch. They will create line plots to represent this data. Students will also accurately place fractions on a number line.
- Students will understand two fractions as equivalent (equal) if they are the same size, or at the same point on a number line (denominators of 2, 3, 4, 6, and 8). (NF.A.3a)
- Students will use models to recognize and generate simple equivalent fractions and explain why they are equivalent by using a visual fraction model. (NF.3b)
- Students will express whole numbers as fractions and recognize fractions that are equivalent to whole numbers. (NF.3c)
- Students will compare two fractions with the same numerator or the same denominator by reasoning about their size and recognize that comparisons are valid only when the two fractions refer to the same whole. (3.NF.A.3d)
- Students will record results of comparisons with the symbols >, =, or <, and justify the conclusions by using a visual fraction model (NF.A.3d)
- Students will generate measurement data by measuring lengths using rulers marked with halves and fourths of an inch and show the data by making a line plot, where the horizontal scale is marked off in appropriate units- whole numbers, halves, and quarters. (MD.B.4)
- Students will demonstrate mastery of using a line plot to answer questions or solve problems. (MD.B.4)
- Students will understand a fraction as a number on the number line and represent fractions on a number line diagram. (3.NF.A.2ab)

Resources
Resources
- Conduct a survey among family members and construct a line plot to display your findings.
- Collect a variety of pencils (at least 10). Measure and record lengths on a line plot.
- Using different objects around the house, repeat the process from #2.
