Unit 2
Counting and Representing Numbers to 10
Unit 2 Overview:
Students usually come to school with informal mathematics knowledge; with the ability to count and think about numbers in a variety of ways. In this unit, we will connect the concepts of counting orally, writing numbers, representing a set of objects with a number, and using the correct number name for only one object with the numbers 0 to 10. Focus on knowing the number names in sequence, recognizing numbers, matching a number to a set of objects, and counting objects with 1 to 1 correspondence for the numbers up to 10. Students who have mastered up to 10, will move to higher numbers.
- Students will write numbers 0-10 to represent a set of objects, demonstrating understanding that 0 represents an empty set. (K.CC.A.3)
- Students will understand that the last number name said represents all of the objects that have been counted. (K.CC.B.4a, K.CC.B.4b)
- Students will count to answer “how many” and build a collection to represent a given number 1-10. (K.CC.B.5)
Home Activities
Use everyday moments to count aloud with your child, consider playtime, cleaning, riding in car, etc. In doing this, a child’s understanding of rote counting (saying numbers sequentially) is improved. Solidify counting within 10, but don’t deter them from trying. Then, continue going beyond.
