Unit 9

Measurement and Geometry (20 Days)

Unit 9 Overview:

In unit 9, students will tell time to the nearest minute and measure time intervals in minutes. They will also find the area and perimeter of irregular polygons. Students will create picture graphs and bar graphs to represent a data set. They will then answer questions regarding the graphs. Finally, students will recognize that shapes that share attributes belong to a larger category.

  • Students will tell and write time to the nearest minute, measure time intervals in minutes and solve word problems involving addition and subtraction of time intervals in minutes, e.g., by representing the problem on a number diagram (MD.A.1)
  • Students will draw a scaled picture graph and a scaled bar graph to represent a data set with several categories and solve one- and two-step “how many more” and “how many less” problems using information presented in scaled bar graphs. (MD.B.3)
  • Students will use tiling to show in a concrete case that the area of a rectangle with whole-number side lengths a and b + c is the sum of a x b and a x c and use area models to represent the distributive property in mathematical reasoning. (MD.C.7c)
  • Students will recognize area as additive and find areas of rectilinear figures by decomposing them into non-overlapping rectangles and adding areas of the non-overlapping parts, applying this technique to solve real world problems. (MD.C.7.d)
  • Students will solve real world and mathematical problems involving perimeter of polygons, including finding perimeter given the side lengths, finding an unknown side length, and exhibiting rectangles with the same perimeter and different areas or with the same area and different perimeters. (MD.D.8)
  • Students will understand that shapes in different categories (e.g., rhombuses, rectangles, and others) may share attributes (e.g., having four sides), and that the shared attributes can define a larger category (e.g., quadrilaterals) and recognize rhombuses, rectangles, and squares as examples of quadrilaterals, and draw examples of quadrilaterals that do not belong to any of these subcategories. (G.A.1)
Grade 3 Unit 9 Family Resource

Home Activities

Resources

  • Use grid paper to create various polygons.
  • Identify, describe, and classify different household objects based on their attributes.
  • Identify angles that are less than, equal to, and greater than right angles.
  • Go on a shape hunt! Look for geometric shapes in your home and community. Create a chart to show your findings.
  • Conduct a survey among family members and construct a line plot to display your findings.
  • Collect a variety of pencils (at least 10). Measure and record lengths on a line plot.
  • Using different objects around the house, repeat the process from #2.
  • Keep a daily schedule with times.
  • Give your child a time you will be leaving. Have your child determine the amount of time that will need to pass before you leave a location.
  • Ask, “How much time has passed since…..?”
  • Use a television schedule to find time interval in between programs.

Websites/Videos/Games

  • "On Time" Online Game - Practice creating given times with this online game.
  • Telling Time Vocabulary Game - Practice identifying the correct times using vocabulary words such as “quarter after” and “quarter of.”
  • Bedtime Bandits - Online game where students identify the target time on a clock. Each level progressively gets more rigorous. NOTE: Level one is telling time to the hour and half hour only.
  • Clock Works - Online time telling game for kids.
  • Measuring Activity - Students use a ruler to find the length of various lines to the nearest inch, half inch, or quarter inch.
  • Finding the Correct Length - Students identify the correct length.
  • Measuring Teddy Bears - This online activity has students measuring various teddy bears with an online ruler. It does not have students place data on a line plot.
  • Line Plot Questions - This website provides various questions about different line plots.
  • Understanding Area- Online problems to practice finding area and perimeter.
  • Area and Perimeter Word Problems - A website with math stories to determine area and perimeter.
  • Area Game - An online game to practice finding area using grids.
  • Zoo Design - This online game requires students to use a grid structure to create zoo exhibits using knowledge of area and perimeter.
  • Polygon Sort - An online polygon sort.
  • Identifying Quadrilaterals - Practice naming quadrilaterals with this online activity.
  • Finding the Right Shape - An online activity where students find the requested shape.
  • Open and Closed Shape Game - Students play this game online to practice identifying open and closed shapes.
  • Polygons Game- Play this online game to practice identifying shapes that are polygons.

Other Resources

  • Virtual Manipulatives - Use the online clock to practice telling time and solving problems involving time.
