Grade 2 Unit 4
Applying Place Value Number Patterns
Unit 4 Overview:
In unit 4 students will explore place value (skip counting, comparing numbers, base ten, number values) with numbers up to 1,000. Using place value to break down larger numbers is a great, quick addition strategy. Ex: 19+24:19=10+9/24=20+4,10+20=30, 9+4=13, 30+13=43.
- Students will understand that the three digits of a three-digit number represent amounts of hundreds, tens, ones; e.g., 706 equals 7 hundreds, 0 tens, and 6 ones.
2. Students will read and write numbers to 1000 using base ten numerals, number names and expanded form to justify representations. (2.NBT.A.3)
3. Students will compare two three-digit numbers based on meanings of the hundred, tens, and ones digits, using >, =, and < symbols to record the results of comparisons. (2.NBT.A.4)
4. Students will skip count by 5’s , 10’s, and 100’s,starting at any multiple of 5, 10, and 100, within 1,000 to determine patterns. (2.NBT.A.2)
5. Students will determine whether a group of objects (up to 20) has an odd or even number of members, e.g., by pairing objects or counting them by 2s and write an equation to express an even number as a sum of two equal addends. (2.OA.C.3)
6. Students will identify coins (quarters, dimes, nickels, and pennies), applying skip counting strategies to determine the value of a mixed set of coins up to a $1 in real life situations. (2.MD.C.8)
7. Students will use concrete models to construct rectangular arrays using repeated addition to record the equation in expressing the total as a sum of equal addends. (2.OA.C.4)
Home Activities
- Build Money Understanding.
- Take out a handful of coins and work with your child on identifying each coin by the name of the coin and the value. In quarter 1, we practice with pennies, nickels and dimes. The quarter will be introduced in a later unit.
- You can help your child practice skip counting to find the total value of the coins.
- It is really important for children to get real life experience paying with money and understanding how the process works, including the idea of getting change back.

Place Value- In this video you will learn to find the value of each digit by making a model.(2.NBT.A.3)
Comparing Numbers -In this video you will learn how to compare numbers by using a number line. (2.NBT.A.4)
Break Apart Strategy: Addition -This video shows the break apart addition strategy modeled by a group of students.
Websites/Games
Numbers to One Hundred on the Mathrack- Click the “Numbers to One Hundred on the Mathrack activity” under Grade 1 Number Sense. Using a ten-wire MathRack, students recognize and apply patterns of five, ten, and fifty to develop counting.
Base Ten Fun - Represent numbers in various ways.
Comparing Numbers - Compare numbers using the greater, less and equal signs.
Word Problems up to One Dollar - Use word problems to solve money problems
Dolphin Dash - Count money and race against a group of dolphins.
Break Apart Game- This game allows children to practice the break apart strategy, focusing on doubles and make ten.
