Unit 2

Using Strategies to Add and Subtract

Unit 2 Overview:

In this unit, the children will use counting strategies to add and subtract within 20. The children will learn how to “add to” and “put together” numbers for addition. They will learn how to “take apart” and “take from” numbers for subtraction. Students will understand that the equal sign means that quantities on both sides of the equal side are the same.

  • Students will use objects, drawings, and equations to model and solve real world addition and subtraction story structures for all result and total unknown with sums and differences within 20. (1.OA.A.1)
  • Students will use addition and subtraction counting strategies (plus/minus 0, 1, 2) with sums and differences within 20 to develop fluency within 10 and show the relationship between addition and subtractions equations. (1.OA.C.5, 1.OA.C.6)
  • Students will understand the meaning of the equal sign with equations involving the same operation, using concrete models, recording their representations with drawings to determine if addition and subtraction equations are true or false. For example, 6 = 6, 7 = 8 - 1, 5 + 2 = 2 + 5, 4 + 1 = 5 + 2. (1.OA.D.7)

Home Activities

  • Counting on and counting back are great strategies to practice addition and subtraction. Consider using a part part whole as a tool.
  • Have your child count a set of objects less than 12. Give your child 1-4 more objects. Have the child count on from the previous number to find out how many objects there are in all.
  • Have your child count a set of objects less than 20. Take away 1-4 objects from set. Have your child count back from the original number to find how many objects are left.
  • Draw a equal sign symbol on a piece of paper. Give your child an even number of objects. Have your child place the same number of objects on both sides of the equal sign.
  • Have children play a game against one another and keep score. At the end, compare the scores - determining if the amounts are equal or not.
