Unit 6

Understanding and Applying Addition and Subtraction (15 Days)

Unit 6 Overview:

In unit 6, students will round whole numbers to the nearest 10 and 100. They will also fluently add and subtract within 1000 using strategies and models to explain their reasoning. Using their knowledge of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, students will solve two step word problems. They will also solve one-step problems involving various measurements. During this unit, students will explore perimeter and will represent data using both bar graphs and picture graphs.

  • Students will use place value understanding to round whole numbers to the nearest 10 or 100. (NBT.A.1)
  • Students will fluently add and subtract within 1,000 using strategies and algorithms based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction. (NBT.A.2, OA.D.9)
  • Students will make explicit connections between models and written work while explaining their reasoning when adding and subtracting. (NBT.A.2) (OA.D.9)
  • Students will solve two-step word problems using addition, subtraction, and multiplication and assess the reasonableness of their answer using estimation through rounding. (OA.D.8)
  • Students will tell and write time to the nearest minute and measure time intervals in minutes. Solve word problems involving addition and subtraction of time intervals in minutes, e.g., by representing the problem on a number line. (MD.A.1)
  • Students will solve one-step problems involving measurement and estimation of intervals of time, liquid volumes, and masses of objects using standard units of grams (g), kilograms (kg), and liters (l). (MD.A.1, MD.A.2)
  • Students will explore perimeter of polygons by solving real world problems with side lengths given and finding an unknown side length. (MD.D.8)
  • Students represent and interpret data using picture and bar graphs to solve one and two step problems using information presented in graphs. (MD.B.3)
