Unit 5

Solving Problems with Addition and Subtraction

Unit 5 Overview:

This unit is all about adding and subtracting numbers. During the unit, children will solve word problems which will require them to “add to” or “put together” values up to 20. They will solve addition and subtraction problems in a variety of ways. For example, the children can use drawings, pictures, diagrams, number lines and equations. The children will use strategies such as “make a ten”, “adding on 0, 1 and 2” and using what they know about the associative and commutative properties to solve problems. They will also use develop their understanding of the equal sign by determining if both sides of the equation are equal.

  • Students will relate counting to addition and subtraction. (1.OA.C.5)
  • Students will use the strategies (plus/minus 0, 1, 2 and make/break apart 10) with sums and differences within 20 to develop fluency within 10 and show the relationship between addition and subtraction equations. (1.OA.C.6)
  • Students will use the commutative property to solve addition word problems whose sum is less than or equal to 20. (1.OA.B.3)
  • Students will use the associative property and strategies (ie. make ten) with objects, drawings, and equations to solve real world situations with addition of three whole numbers involving sums within 20. (1.OA.B.3 & 1.OA.A.2)
  • Students will use concrete models to understand the equal sign means that there are two equivalent quantities, regardless of the operation, on each side of the equal sign using the terms true or false. (1.OA.D.7)
  • Students will use objects, drawings, and equations to model and solve real world addition and subtraction story structures (addend and change unknown) with sums and differences within 20. (1.OA.A.1)
  • Students will use real life situations to organize, represent, interpret and compare data with up to three categories, using counting strategies. (1.MD.C.4)

Home Activities

Commutative Property: The children may call this property of operations

“flip-flop facts”, “fact families”, “turn-around facts”, or “switch-around facts”. The commutative property simply means that numbers can be added in any order.

Associative Property:

The children will learn that they can group numbers in different ways to add them together.

Part-Part Total:

Children will learn to put the parts together to make the total.

Make 10 Strategy: Children will look for ways to make a 10 when solving an equation to make the equation easier to solve..

8 + 5 = 10 + 3

Thinking Blocks: Addition (Apple)

Thinking Blocks Addition teaches children how to model and solve word problems involving addition and subtraction. In this interactive tutorial, children are introduced to 6 problem solving models.

Math Slide Addition (Apple)

Math Slide is a multiplayer game helping children understand tens and ones; numbers up to 100. Players learn by sliding tiles into the center to match an answer, equation or image. The player who slides their tiles first wins.
