Unit 4

Deepening Understanding of Fractions

Unit 4 Overview:

In unit 4, students will continue exploring fractions. They will count by unit fractions. For example, they will recognize that 3 pieces that are all ¼ equals ¾. They will also recognize and generate equivalent fractions. Students will use rulers to measure lengths using whole and half measurements. They will then use this data to create line plots in order to solve and answer questions regarding the data.

  • Students will understand that a fraction 1/b as the quantity formed by 1 part when a whole is partitioned into b equal parts; understand a fraction a/b as the quantity formed by a parts of size 1/b. (NF.A.1)
  • Students will apply their understanding of a unit fraction in order to count by unit fractions (For example, they can count 3 pieces of ¼ as ¼ + ¼ + ¼ or ¾ and recognize that as the distance from 0 to a point on the number line). (NF.A.2b)
  • Students will understand if two fractions represent the same size or are located at the same point on a number line they are equivalent. (denominators of 2, 3, 4, 6, and 8) (NF.A.3a)
  • Students will use models to recognize and generate simple equivalent fractions by using a visual model. (NF.A.3b)
  • Students will express whole numbers as fractions and recognize fractions that are equivalent to whole numbers. (NF.3c)
  • Students will use rulers to generate measurement data by measuring lengths and show the data in a line plot using wholes and halves to answer questions and solve problems. (MD.B.4)
Grade 3 Unit 4 Family Resource

Home Activities

Resources

  • Conduct a survey among family members and construct a line plot to display your findings.
  • Collect a variety of pencils (at least 10). Measure and record lengths on a line plot.
  • Using different objects around the house, repeat the process from #2.
  • Keep a daily schedule with times.
  • Give your child a time you will be leaving. Have your child determine the amount of time that will need to pass before you leave a location.
  • Ask, “How much time has passed since…..?”
  • Use a television schedule to find time intervals in between programs.
