Unit 9

Extending Shapes and Partitioning

Unit 9 Overview:

In this unit, children will revisit geometry concepts they learned earlier in the year. They will identify and sort both two-dimensional and three-dimensional shapes based on their defining attributes. They will use 2D and 3D shapes to compose new shapes and will examine these shapes to identify their shape parts. The children will partition shapes in equal shares using the words halves, fourths and quarters.

  • Students will distinguish between defining attributes (e.g., triangles are closed and three-sided) versus non-defining attributes (e.g. color, orientation, overall size); build and draw shapes to possess defining attributes. (1.G.A.1)
  • Students will compose two-dimensional shapes (rectangles, square, trapezoids, triangles, half-circles, and quarter circles) or three-dimensional shapes (cubes, right rectangular prisms, right circular cones, and right circular cylinders) to create a composite shape, and compose new shapes from the composite shapes. (1.G.A.2)
  • Students will partition circles and rectangles into two and four equal shapes, describe the shares using the words halves, fourths, and quarters, and use the phrases half of, fourth of, and quarter of. Describe the whole as two of, or four of the shares. Understand for these examples that decomposing into more equal shares creates smaller shapes. (1.G.A.3)

Geometry- The Study of Shapes

The children will learn that defining attributes of shapes are the characteristics that tell what the shape is (ex. number of sides, number of corners/vertices, open or closed). Non-defining attributes are characteristics that do not tell what a shape is (ex. color and size).

Shapes All Around

Two-dimensional Shapes- Shapes that have 2 dimensions: length and width.

Three-dimensional Shapes- Shapes that have 3 dimensions: length width and depth.

Partitioning- Equal Shares

Without using the term fractions, we begin to explore the concept of partitioning a shape into equal parts. 1st graders learn and apply the terms, halves and fourths or quarters.

Food Shares

Use graham crackers, a cookie or a slice of cheese or other yummy snack and ask your child how he/she would share the food with you.

Other Resources - APPS

Kids Measure App (Android)

Young scientists learn to analyse the physical world by measuring across a variety of domains - time, size, weight and money. 5-8 year old kids measure length, weight, time and money in this science app using a tape, a scale, a clock and coins in 20 exercises. Full version has 300+ exercises of increasing difficulty.

Geometry 4 Kids App (Android)

This Geometry app is built for elementary kids ages 5 - 10. App teaches a plethora of geometrical concepts listed below. The App contains Learning modules that explain each concept clearly, with illustrations (including real life examples) and narration that can be followed with ease. Practice modules are also included. Practice modules lets kids practice at their own pace. We have also included a unique geometry riddles section in which clues are presented, and kids are supposed to figure out the geometrical shape based on the clues provided (a great way to indulge kids & reinforce concepts in a classroom setting). A Critical Thinking section is also provided that provides challenging questions to spark up young minds.
