Unit 2 Overview:
This unit is about understanding our place value system into the thousandths place. Students are familiar with expanded form notation and can use this to expand on this new knowledge, as well as you can begin to introduce the parenthesis while exploring expanded form. This unit is just the beginning of using parentheses, brackets and braces to write and evaluate expressions. Showing students what these symbols look like with just a few operations will set the groundwork for upcoming units.
- Students will recognize that in any multi-digit number, a digit in one place represents 10 times as much as it represents in the place to its right and 1/10 of what it represents in the place to its left. (NBT.A.1)
- Students will denote powers of 10 and use symbols to compare two powers of 10 expressed exponentially (Example: 10 to the power of 2 and 10 to the power 5) (NBT.A.2)
- Students will use parentheses, brackets, or braces in a numerical expressions and evaluate expressions with these symbols. (OA.A.1)
- Students will read, write, and compare decimals to thousandths using base ten numerals, number names & expanded form. (NBT.A.3a)
- Students will compare decimals using symbols and rounding strategies and use place value understanding to round decimals to any place. (NBT.B.3b & NBT.A.4)
- Students will determine whether to round up or down depending on the context of the situation. (NBT.A.4)
- Students will demonstrate mastery of adding and subtracting decimals to the hundredths and apply this concept to a real world context. (GLS is mastery of all 4 operations) (NBT.B.7)
