Friday FUNday
Today was the second Friday FUNday. The first week was small, but successful. We are hoping to build upon that energy and continue to provide opportunities for students to make connections with one another. FRIDAY FUNDAY provides students a chance to get together and mingle with other students that share the same interests. Please encourage your kids to check out one of these groups. Note and Notice signposts help students connect actively with text and improve their thinking and comprehension. This week we focussed on the Again and Again signpost and practiced inferring what it meant for an author to repeat an object or event. We also practiced working with tough questions that can reveal a character's inner conflict and may foreshadow upcoming events.
Students have successfully completed their first quiz over The Adventures of Ulysses. They did very well on this and have a solid understanding of our reading so far! As we continue to read, we are learning a lot about Ulysses' journey and the many challenges that he and his crew need to overcome!
We have also begun some beginning work on our narrative writing centered around the theme "Journey Home", which connects nicely to our class reading. In the coming weeks, our main focus will be finishing The Adventures of Ulysses, however, one day a week we will revisit our narrative writing work.
Students are wrapping up their study of heat transfer this week. Our test will be Monday, November 9 with all re-takes due by Friday, November 13. We are looking forward to beginning our Lithosphere unit next week. We'll utilize contour maps from the US Geological Survey, Ohio relief maps, and Google Earth to explore lots of new ideas.
We are wrapping up our study of the Hydrologic cycle and what makes water so amazing! We learned about properties of water like its ability to "stick" to itself due to Hydrogen bonds. We also have learned how heat transfer plays a role in the hydrologic cycle. We will take our test on Friday, 11/13. This test will cover the Earth's spheres interactions, water properties, phase changes, and the hydrologic cycle.
This week we learned about Alexander the Great, discussed whether he was as great as his mother thought he was and impact that he had on the world. We also discussed the legacy of Ancient Greece and why it is considered "the cradle of Western civilization". We also discussed the election on Wednesday, as I'm sure you can imagine, it could be quite spirited. Next week we will beginning our unit on Rome.
Aloha
This has been an interesting week as we've spent a little time each day processing the election results as they come in. On Monday, we finished up our lesson on navigating media bias in the news - this week, the students were able to choose their own sources for their Weekly Current Event. We also learned about the Golden Age of Greece and the enduring impacts that the time period has had on our modern life. Next week, students will be choosing one enduring impact on which to research and create a modern representation. Can't wait to see the creativity flowing!
We just finished our test for Equalities and Inequalities and are moving on to multiple representations of Equations and Linear Equations will be next.

Reconnecting with Nature artworks are due Friday 11/6/2020. We will start our new project on Monday next week. The next unit will focus on using recycled and natural materials to create a functional artwork. Remember we will meet on Tuesday and Thursday on google meet. I am available the other days during class time for questions. Have a great week of creating.
This week, we were inspired by Ada's Violin The Story of the Recycled Orchestra of Paraguay. Students created their own instruments made of recycled materials from their own home. We then used drums from found things around the house to practice basic rhythm patterns to prepare for our world drumming unit. Next week, we will focus on the Afoxe which is a Brazilian style of drumming performed during parades and Carnival!
In music this week students explored the Recycled Orchestra of Paraguay, an orchestra of students who play instruments made out of completely recycled materials. We delved into how these instruments were made and students made their own instruments out of recycled materials. Next week we will be examine our cultural heritage through music. Students will research and share a song connected to their cultural heritage.
The high school band and orchestra teachers have worked together to put together a site with resources for middle school RLA students. The purpose of this site is to provide a place where students can go to choose materials and ideas for continuing their instrumental practice. This is not a graded curriculum, but rather an extension opportunity that students in RLA may take advantage of. It is optional and designed to help students continue to learn and grow in band and orchestra. Students must be logged in to their DCS account to access this resources in this site.

This week in Cog we started our study of geopolitics using a platform called FanSchool. Students draft countries around the world to create their "teams." Then they earn points based on current events in their drafted countries. Countries that are in the news more often, earn more points. We spent a majority of this week researching countries and newspapers to prepare for our draft next Monday! Ask your student which country is their number one pick!
