It's a long weekend for kids! No school Friday (2/12) or Monday (2/15). Hopefully kids will enjoy a much-needed break away from their computer screens.

This week in ELA we have examined audience and how the audience affects the message being communicated. We are learning critical thinking strategies about what information to trust, starting with identifying purposes of communication as the first step. Students are analyzing, discussing and categorizing articles, ads and videos into the following 6 primary purposes: document, entertain, Inform, persuade, provoke and sell. It is not as easy as it sounds. The conversations this week have been excellent!
Researching, reading and gathering evidence have been a key focus this past week! Students have been reading from credible sources about their chosen person of interest for our informative writing unit! They have collected sources and are now collecting evidence on the "big ideas" (challenges/obstacles that person faced, their unfortunate end, and a choice between their hope/positive attitude, resilience or innovation). All of the evidence focuses on their chosen person of interest.
Additionally, we are continuing to learn Greek roots; this week we learned the root "pac" (which means peace) like in the words pacify, pacifist, pacifier, etc. Next week we will add two more Greek roots to our repertoire!
It's all about wind this week! Students have been learning about heat transfer - conduction, convection, radiation - and air density. Our learning about global winds and local winds ties everthing together!
As an extension to our study of water and air pollution, students were given an opportunity to watch Pixar's WALL.E on their own or with their families in preparation for a movie discussion group during flexible learning time. There are so many themes in the movie that fit nicely into our learning.
We are continuing our study of the atmosphere. Students created their own atmosphere drawings, using temperature data, density modeling, and Kami tools. This week, we will begin to look at the human impacts on our atmosphere, including air pollution. Students will learn about their own impacts on our atmosphere and how we can all be a part of the change for cleaner air!
